The Anderson Garden

The garden design reflects influences of northeastern, southeastern and northwestern styles, and integrates elements of British and Japanese gardens. Bob's training in landscape architechiture at Penn State gave him the technical skills to translate his unique vision into an arrangement of living plants.

One of the most distinguishing features of the garden is its color composition. Over the years, Bob collected more than a hundred species and four hundred different hybrids of rhododendrons (including azaleas.) To provide the several thousand plants needed to complete the garden, he propagated them from cuttings in Nearing frames. Complementing these were hundreds of companion plants--trees, shrubs, and flowers--carefully chosen for form, leaf texture, color, and compatibility.

Green River Gorge Conservation Area

Down in the bottom of the torturous sandstone canyon of the Green River Gorge, looking at honeycombed cliffs decked with hanging fern gardens and laced by spring-fed baby waterfalls, it feels like you're in the wildest place in King County.

The river is green indeed, and white as it rushes headlong into cliffs, sweeps around boulders and plunges into pools where bronze-backed king salmon roll.

The Green River has carved one of the most magnificent gorges in the entire state, only a short distance from Seattle. The dense vegetation growing along the walls of the Gorge create a feeling of the tropics and many locals refer to the Gorge as a "hanging garden."

A network of makeshift trails lines the gorge's rim and drops to its depths, drawing mostly local hikers, mountain bikers, anglers and horse riders. Whitewater rafters and kayakers consider it one of the most scenic rivers in Washington

If whitewater is what you want, the Green River Gorge is one of the best with twenty-seven Class III rapids and four Class IV rapids. The trip starts out with exhilaration as the Class IV rapid "Ledge Drop #1" awaits you at the first bend. The highlight of the trip comes when you encounter "Mercury," "The Nozzle," and "Seeing God" back to back. For their safety, children must be at least 16 for the Green River Gorge.

You are in one of the wildest spots of the county, even though this chasm is surrounded by exploding suburbia and is just 25 eagle miles from downtown Seattle.
